Tree Tips

. Get started with a pen and paper

The first step is to get your tree right first on paper. Go through the software and samples for identifying colours for each generation. Then use crayons for writing the names, so that it will be easier for you while entering it online. Always remember to try and get the full name with any additional surnames or titles. Make sure that you don't break the flow in between and only start with completely known history.

. Consult elders and search previous documentation

Interview your grandparents or uncles to get as much information from them regarding your ancestors, their full names and additional surnames, if any. You can ask open ended questions to get favourable responses. Also, ask them if they can recall any special anecdotes or family customs that are unique to your kinfolk. You can also get precise data from old property documents, certificates or similar records.

. Feed in the initial info

Once you have got a basic tree on paper, get set to feed it online using the software. You can go through the software help section to understand the process better. When you are done with it, fill in the family history, adding anecdotes and additional information. You can start with explaining your family names as each name has a meaning that can be traced to history or culture.

Look for uniqueness

Always look for anything different or exciting in your family history, like incidents or anecdotes. If you come across any major achievements or tasks performed by your ancestors or present members then this can make your tree interesting.

Keep updating extended family

The best way to maintain a family tree is to involve members of your family. Keep them informed of any updates or additions. Post regular comments on any new information and ask for confirmation or additions from others. The family tree exercise is a vast and never ending one that gets better with time, as more and more interesting information surfaces and new changes take place. So, keep an eye on the happening and make sure that your family gets together online as often as possible.
